Reflection 1

The documentary, Super Size Me had left me in awe. Right from the beginning, I was astounded to see how many people in America are actually obese, and seeing the reason why is even more shocking. Fast food floods the streets in America, with McDonald's being the most common. Where I live, there is a McDonald's that is only five minutes away and just this past summer, another one popped up that is only three minutes away... hopefully you see the problem here. At first when I was skimming through the list I thought that I would not pick a film that truly interested me and instead would be a film I was forced to watch in order to get a good grade. However, after the first ten minutes I had caught myself taking interest in what was going on and agreed with the problems they were going to show in the rest of the film. My initial impression was surprising and honestly, disgusted. I never really took in the fact that some individuals eat fast food on the daily and they do not realize how much damage they are causing to their bodies. I myself do eat fast food a couple of times a month, but seeing that others do consume it everyday, I see how many risks they are putting themselves into now. By watching this film of man whom consumes McDonald's 3 times a day for 30 days in a row, it shows what eating at fast food places could eventually do to you and how much it could harm you. The picture above is from the film showing the beginning to the end of his high fat diet. As you can see Morgans risks are doubled and have increased higher risks for multiple things. The doctors in the film were even surprised by how much his body has changed and how sick Morgan was actually getting from this experiment.  I personally think everyone should be shown this either during school or should watch it on their own to see the risks they are taking by eating a certain amount of these fast foods every day, week, month, or year.

I found that it was so much easier to relate to your reflection since I watched the same documentary as well. Supersize Me was a real eye opener and I feel like if more people watched this documentary then they would really get an understanding of just how harmful fast food is to our bodies. Morgan's bodily changes honestly made me feel disgusted as well, as you said. Eating McDonald's that frequently is sickening and the fact that there are people out there who do eat here rather often is even more sickening. I live about twenty minutes from the nearest McDonald's in my area and when you said that there are two within five minutes from your house I kind of couldn't believe it. It makes me wonder like what is the point of them being that close to each other. Obviously they're there to make money and the health of their consumers isn't always the top priority it seems. I'm honestly grossed out after watching this and I would be okay if I gave up McDonald's from here on out. I feel like more people would be on board too if they really knew what the food did to our health.

  2. What was showed in this video is JUST SICK! But like I been saying all over everyone’s post I do not think that its McDonalds fault we cannot blame them for people doing this to them self. At this point of where we are, we need to stop eating so much fast food and start getting healthy again. What really hurts is even though we have seen this video, we will still go and eat there because we are so use to it. We won’t stop eating there overnight but in 10 years I do believe that not many people will still be eating there because the effects of it would be more common to others.

  3. Hi Marge!

Your was awesome and really detailed, thanks for sharing with us.

I watched the same documentary, so I wanted to respond to your post first! I think we had a lot of the same views and reactions but you made some great points that I didn't!

You definitely made a great point in bringing up the fact that Morgan "only" ate McDonald's for 30 days. There are some people who eat fast food 3 meals a days, 365 days a year. Can you even imagine the damage being done to their body?!?! I think Steven made a good point in his comment saying that people will need to come to their own realization, in time, to acknowledge the damage and stop eating fast food. It's kind of like the saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." This documentary blatantly showed people the disgust and damage fast food can cause and yet people continue eating it. This documentary was in theaters and a TON of people saw it, so the excuse is not there that they have not been informed of the dangers of constantly eating fast food.

I honestly do eat fast food frequently and I know it's not good. It's just challenging to eat healthy when I am always in the car on my way to work or school. I don't have time to sit down and have a real meal. I think people realize what they're eating is bad, but the convenience factor convinces them to eat it anyway. There are seriously 3 McDonald's within 5 minutes of my house.

Your reflection really intrigued me. I really liked how you included a picture to help describe the problem that is taking place on a daily basis.

It's good that you found a documentary that you were really interested in watching. As you mentioned, it is pretty crazy that there are some people who eat fast food almost every day. It seems hard to believe that there are people who would harm themselves like that. I found it very shocking that Morgan gained 24.5 pounds in just 30 days. That's almost a pound a day! It's unbelievable how unhealthy the fast food industry is. More people need to watch this documentary so that the next time they will think twice about driving through a McDonald's.

  5. I liked your reflection, I think you brought up good points. I agree that eating fast food here and there isn't as bad but when your hear people rely on fast food and a meal daily is kind of scary. Especially after seeing the risks from the film. And the same thing happened in my town also in the past few years, we had one Mcdonalds that was put under construction for a few months, and in the mean time a new one opened less than a mile away. Now we two McDonalds within a mile from each other, its ridiculous. And while driving past both, they are so busy. I think this film should be required because of how unhealthy that lifestyle of eating fast food daily really is.
